One day I was driving my wife to her appointment and we got stopped on a traffic light. On my right was a corner store selling maps. On the store window was a bold sign- "Get a Map or Get Lost !". Either buy one or the owner will tell you to get l_ _ _! And you will really get lost in the process if you don't know where you are going. Lucky for me!...I know where we were going.
How about free Sydney map?
If you are flying to Sydney, those airline flight magazines would have a map of Sydney Australia. When you land in Sydney Australia Airport, be sure to pick one of those travel guides and brochures before exiting the terminal. They are all over the place.
When you check in for your accommodation, somewhere in the lobby closest to the reception will be a rack full of flyers and brochures of attractions and things to do in Sydney. Your room will have one or two of those brochures for sure.
In the streets!...especially in the major attractions. You will find street directories of Sydney like this!

Though Sydney is very safe and friendly place to travel, the last thing you want is the the stress of getting lost and trying to find your way around especially at night.
As a local I have been using Gregory's Street Directory and UBD Street Directory. They are the best street directories Of Sydney. Always get me from A to B. There is a drawback though...you need to update once in awhile. Sydney is growing and there are always new suburbs sprouting
all the time. In my 22 years in Sydney, I have updated three time...once very five years. Not bad.
If you can afford it, you can't go wrong with a GPS device. Very handy to give you the best street directories of Sydney. It tells you when to turn left or right, when you are going over the speed limit and when there is a speed camera ahead.
I think it is one of the best inventions of the current technology. Why?...you might ask. Because it saves a lot of marriages!!!( If you are not married you might not have an idea what I mean.)
See the old map of Botany Bay below? It was probably used by the early British settlers in the early Sydney history. They never got lost! That is why Sydney or Australia for that matter is more English than anything else.
