My Early Sydney Walkabout
My Sydney walkabout began about 20 years ago when we, my wife Yoli and young daughter Romenda, migrated to Sydney from the
Philippines. My older brother Rene had sponsored me and my young family to migrate to Australia. We settled in the inner suburb of Rozelle
in the fringe of the city.
I was working as merchant seaman before we migrated to Sydney and my wife worked in the office in one of the departments in the United States Facilities- a naval base in Subic Bay. My work had afforded me to see and travel different parts of the world...but it also took me awayfor months and sometimes years from my young family. We did not think twice when my brother Rene sponsored us to migrate to Sydney. Rozelle is one of the oldest suburbs in Sydney. Most of the industries were gone and replace by new residential developments. But you can still see some old terrace houses which characterised this suburb. After renting for four years in Rozelle, we decided it was time for us to have our own place. Because of its close proximity to the city, we can not afford to buy in Rozelle. Real estate in Sydney at that time too was in its peak...plus interest rate was at its highest- 15%! It was actually my big sister Recy who found a place for us...a vacant land in the suburb where they have bought their house. Rydalmere is a working class suburb 20 kilometers west of Sydney. It is actually closer to Parramatta, a second city to Sydney. We had a three bedroom house built and moved in 1993. We have lived in Rydalmere ever since. Its closeness to Parramatta and Sydney makesit ideal. It is serviced by three public transport- bus, train and ferry. And they are just walk away from our place. Living and adapting to new country has its challenges, and we had our share. But through perseverance and steadfastness, we were able to overcomethem and carved our own place in this city we now called home.
As the influx of migrants from around the world came and settled in Sydney, the city also began its transformation to where it
is now. A modern city with all its sophistication and trappings.
But one thing has not change...that laid-backness and "will be right mate" attitude. Sydney has not caught the fast pace attitude
that characterises a lot of modern city. The thing that we did not like about Sydney then is the thing that we love about Sydney
now.
I know you will fall in love with Sydney as we do.
Out Of The Rut Walkabout I have spent half of my life now in Sydney and it has been an amazing journey...especially the last ten years. I don't know about you, but something will happen in your life that will turn it around. It happened to me about ten years ago. Though we have carved a better life for us here in Sydney for which I am grateful of, I feel I were still in a rut. I wanted to do something, and yet I don't know what it was. I found out that it was my social heredity, ie., the things I was taught in my past, that was keeping me in "prison". Growing up, we were taught along this line, "Son, if you want to be successful, go to college. Study, then work hard. Put your nose in the grind stone and you will make it." ( Sounds familiar? ) What can a broke parent teach their children? The same thing that their broke parenthad taught them. Don't get me wrong... I could not have asked for a better parent. They will do everything for us, their children. They just happenedto be broke and therefore could not afford to send us to college. What we lacked materially, they more than compensate it with their love, support and belief in us. So I grew up with this mentality that successful people are those that had done their time in college or university. Doctors, lawyers, accountantsengineers and managers etc. So therefore, I can't do a lot of things because I was not schooled enough. I had let my past to be the reason and excuse for my mediocrity. And then I got knocked(literally) in the head...BAM!...and I woke up. A new me. A new wayof thinking and a far clearer vision. It actually did not happen that fast. I became teachable and allowed myself be mentored...especially by books. For a year or two, I read like crazy. I was reading 2 to 3 books at a time. I had a book in my lunch box to read during my break. I had another book in my car, aside from the tapes I was listening to while driving. And I had another set of books in my bedside table. I read every waking hours. I had to "unlearned" a lot of things by learning new things... I developed a hunger for learning. And when my "context" changed, so was my "content".
"A mind once stretched will never go back to its original dimension."
My Mission Walkabout My personal mission statement: "For His Honour and Glory; to learn, to live, to love, to leave a legacy." I believe that every person has one basic desire...that is to live a happy fulfilled life. My mission statement embodies that desire as it fulfills basic human needs...physical (to live), emotion (to love and be loved), mental (to learn) and spiritual ( to leave a legacy). I believe that the greatest honour and glory I can give my Creator is to do the best of what He has given me.. And as I work my way toward my mission that I give Him honour and glory. If you don't know where you are going, you will never get there. A mission statement serves that purpose. It is the goal...the end in mind. It is like a beacon that guides my every step. It is a vision of what I want to achieve. Building this website is a part of that vision. Time to give back to the city that has given us so much.
"A man without vision shall perish." ( Proverbs )
Me And My SBI Site Walkabout How did I come across building this website? I subscribed to a monthly e-zine after attending a seminar on share trading. One of the article in the e-zine was about internet marketing...building a website about your passion and knowledge. It recommended SBI (SiteBuildIt ) to build it. I did not look any further as I thought it was expensive and too technical for me...learning complex programming. I was also not into computer and I was new to the internet.I was wrong! I found out it cost less than a cup of coffee a day to get started. There is no need to learned complex programming to have your site up and running. As I learn more about the internet and the program I was using and the company , I was hooked! I honestly believe that if you want a residual monthly cash flow, you can't go wrong with building your own internet website. A lot of SBI owners are building websites on their passion and things they love and earn income from it. A lot of has been out of the rat race. Isn't it a neat deal? Getting paid for doing something you love? Mind you, it is not a get rich quick scheme. Tip: If you see one on the net advertising how to make mega bucks with out lifting a finger....run!
Will you be successful in it? Only if you want to. (Click here to see SBI sites that rank in the Top 1% in the Search Engine.) BAM (Brain And Motivation) will do it for you. In fact Ken (SBI founder and president) himself will tell you that not all who used SBI will be successful in it. It has nothing to do with SBI though... It is a personal choice. Is it hard? If a fourteen year old and a retiree can do it, don't you believe you and I can do it too? You bet we can!
Is SBI working for me? As far as the effort and time I put into it, it is. As you can see, my site is still a work in progress.
As long as I persist and plug into the program, I know I will eventually get there.
What about you my friend? What is your vision? And what are you doing about it?
If you don't have one, find one...seek one. If your vision
is your passion, the universe will find a way for you to reach it.
"Our duty as men and women is to proceed as if limits to our abilities did not exist. We are all collaborators of creation".
This is my story...a chapter of my walkabout. The future walkabout is still to be molded with my hands on it.
It is the journey...not the prize.
To your journey,
Romeo
